Rehome A Dog

give a dog its forever home

Which dog is the perfect match for you?

Can you rehome a dog and give a dog it’s forever home?

Sadly, there are many unwanted or abandoned rescue dogs for adoption. If you feel that you can give a rescue dog the commitment it needs, then register with any of the rescue homes for dogs and rehoming centres below. (The list is not exhaustive, and if you feel there should be a dog welfare charity listed, please do get in touch and we will add it happily.)

Every rescue dog is hoping for a home that will last it’s lifetime, so it’s very important that the right dog is matched to the right home, environment and lifestyle to make this possible. The welfare needs of all the rescue dogs for adoption must be met and are done so, by thorough behaviour and veterinary assessments, made by the rehoming teams at the animal rescue centres. This is to enable each dog’s rehoming to be as successful as possible.

Like people, different dogs, have different needs. Some may be good with other dogs or children, where some are not. A dog that has had a lot of trauma in its life might need specialist care or a more experienced companion. A dog that has behavioural issues will need a lot of attention and training. So, bear in mind that although you may fall in love with a dog you see, and you would like to give a dog it’s forever home, it may not be the right dog for you. It may take a bit of time, but there lots of rescue dogs for adoption, and there will a special one that is waiting for you.  The dog rescue centre will work with you to find a dog that’s suitable for you and your family to rehome and give a dog it’s forever home.

You can browse through the online profiles of rescue dogs for adoption or you can drop in to one of the dog rescue centres. If you think you can give a dog it’s forever home, then you should register your interest with the rescue centre.

You will be required to fill in a questionaire. They will want to know various bits of information, for example:

  • The type of dog you’re interested in
  • If you’ve had a dog before
  • If you rent – that you are allowed pets
  • How often you can exercise a dog
  • If you have a secure garden
  • If you have other pets
  • Any major upcoming changes like expecting a baby or moving home
  • How you feel about dog barking or signs of aggression
  • How long you would leave your dog alone

If the dog rescue centre thinks that you and the dog are a good fit, they will set up a meeting with the rescue dogs for adoption, and then a home visit, to ensure your home is suitable for that particular dog. They will also want other family members that live with you, and any dogs you already have, to meet the new dog and make sure that everyone will get along nicely.
