Due to Coronavirus most places are still taking applications for volunteer roles, but final stages of the process will not be completed until the law permits it.  

Don’t be disheartened. Look at some of the possibilities, make an application if you see something that will fit with your lifestyle and existing comittments. 

The volunteer roles listed are ones you can do together with your own dog or someone elses dog. 

The Cinnamon Trust

Work as a volunteer dog walker

“Peace of mind and practical help for people – love, care and safety for pets”

The only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. Help to keep owners together with their beloved pets by becoming a a registered volunteer with the Cinnamon Trust and help walk dogs for the elderly, those that are too ill or housebound or just need your help.

Pets As Therapy

Therapy Dog

Your dog could become a volunteer therapy dog, and together you could visit hospitals, hospices, residential care homes, day centres, special needs schools and many other establishments, providing comfort, companionship and therapy.

All breeds of dog can become part of a PAT Team, they must have been with their owner for at least 6 months, be over 9 months of age and be able to pass the temperament assessment. All pets must be fully vaccinated, and not fed on a raw diet due to health safety of individuals.

Pet Blood Bank

Your Dog Can Give Blood

Their service is managed very carefully by blood type and dogs that have a negative blood type are needed to register, as this blood type can be given to any dog in an emergency. Dogs who are confident and happy being handled make the better donors.

For dogs to register they need to be:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Between one and eight years old
  • Weigh more than 25kg
  • Have a good temperament
  • Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
  • Vaccinated or have an annual titre test after the first year booster
  • Not on any medication

Support Dogs

Work as a volunteer dog carer or socialiser

You will nedd to live close to their training centre in Sheffield. 

Support dogs in training rely on loving volunteers to look after them over night. 

Adult dog foster care – bed & breakfast only

Family Foster carer with children aged between 2 – 12 years 

Puppy Socialiser – Full Time

Puppy Socialiser – Holiday Cover

Adult dog socialiser – Part time

Full time adult foster carer – waiting to train.


Become a TheraPaws volunteer

You will need to be able to comit for a minimum of 6 months, undergo a DBS check, be available for 60 -90 minutes weekly or fortnighly.

All breeds of dogs are welcome onto the TheraPaws programme

  • Must be at least one year old
  • Must have been with you for at least six months
  • Must be fully vaccinated and neutered
  • Must pass an assessment at Mayhew before they are accepted onto the programme.

If your application is successful you will be invited to take part in their two tier assessment.

Dogs For Good

Become a Puppy Socialiser

Dogs For Good train assistance dogs to support people with a physical disability, autism, and dementia

If you have no more than two dogs yourself, you can volunteer to work with Dogs For Good as a puppy socialiser if you meet their criteria found on the registraion form below.


Dogs Trust

Volunteer with Dogs Trust and help in a number of roles including: 

Canine Assistant – At dog school, kennel cleaning, dog walking

Reception volunteer
Garden & Maintenance
Retail Volunteer

You will generally be required to comit to approx 3 hours a week, depending on your role.

Dog International

Volunteer to help dog-owners in need or as a therapy dog volunteer

“Children helping dogs – Dogs helping children”

Underdog International  help children learn to love animals. We do this through dog adoption, youth outreach and animal-assisted therapy.
Be part of ‘Underdog Unity’ which is a UK-wide network of vetted and insured volunteers who support dog-owning neighbours in need.
Underdog therapy dog volunteers. Look for pups of all shapes and sizes to help improve the lives of children. Animal-assisted therapy is highly rewarding for volunteers and dogs alike.
